I moved from the Netherlands to Ireland in 1985. I have held a wide variety of positions in the Care Sector, mainly with adults with physical disabilities and elderly people. I am most passionate in my role of Activities Co-ordinator.

    Title:  Activities- ‘Just game playing?’

Synopsis: I would like to talk about the importance of an Activities Co-ordinator. It is a unique opportunity to get to know the whole person, past, present and future.

Through assisted, personalised activities such as arts and crafts, reading, computer skills, cooking and baking, etc. a person can gain a lot of self confidence and have more fulfilling day’s. ‘Playing games’ is very important for socialising, relaxing and getting to know each other in a fun way. With newly acquired skills and/or developing past skills it becomes easier to find clubs and social gatherings to suit the person and build up a social network.  An individual living a fulfilling live will have less need for clinical and mental health support.
